Samsung Galaxy S - iPhone rival selling well due to it's Android OS and cheaper than iphone 4, a promising alternative?

The Galaxy S is strong competition for the iPhone 4, it's usability is great due to having an Android system. It looks cool too, the sleek design is accompanied by a Super AMOLED screen, giving you crystal clear viewing.

The 5 mega pixel camera is sufficient enough, but also the phone supports HD recording, a must in the HD revolution. Theres apps galore on this phone, and with access to Android Market there's even more to play with. Plus the Galaxy S comes social networking friendly, as standard.

Feeling somewhat flimsy compared to the iPhone 4, I'd say this smartphone is well worth a look.

So Nokia's offering of the mighty N8 packs in a 12 megapixel snapper, something which my DSLR doesn't have, amazing really, but quality on the Nokia is yet to be seen. HD video gives you the highest quality recording, and there's a HDMI connection to playback those moments of madness.

At first glance this could be a Digital Camera, but underneath that busty shell we discover it's actually a Mobile Phone with Nokia's troubled operating system, fiddly and complicated it's just not worth the hassle. Nice phone, nice features, Nokia says it all......

The HTC Desire looks a good competitor for the iPhone 4, Its running similar features and just looks like it means business. The camera's 5 megapixel, with flash and supports face detection. With 1 GHZ processor it will perform. And its social network friendly.

With the Touch Screen revolution well under way, who knows what will be possible in the future. HTC try to capture something good here, but Apple may just win this one. Android run phones are becoming ever more popular, just don't buy a HTC running Windows Mobile....

After huge success worldwide with the original iPhone, iPhone 4 sets to shake the world again. Plus with the launch of iPad, are Apple to put it lightly, taking over the world. Are we all quivering down on our knees, screaming, surely no more.

This is what the fuss is all about:

So, new year approaching, new Prada phone approaching. The last Prada phone came across plastic and tricky to use. But now the Prada 2 comes equipped with a QWERTY keyboard, perhaps this will make life easier, rather than texting on an awkward touchscreen. But it seems this phone also has problems with it's touchscreen.

Features include a 5MP camera, 7.2Mbps HSDPA, Wi–Fi, document editing and full web browsing. Also includes multi touch support, which allows you to zoom in on pictures and web pages by expanding your fingers across the screen. How well this works we shall have to see. If you want one, it will be available on Orange from Phones4U in December.

I just can't help thinking, if it wasn't for that Prada branding, this phone would just disappear into thin air! that sounds nice. What do you think? Renoir maybe?

Sony's special audio technology says it will deliver crystal clear sound, something we can only wait and see. But not only is this phone a music god, the connectivity options don't seem bad either. The W705 supports both Wi-Fi and HSUPA - turbo 3G.

Shake Control let's you change track and adjust volume simply by shaking the phone in different directions. The phone comes You Tube compatible. 4 GB memory card included. Subscribe to your favourite RSS feeds. There's an FM Radio and a 3.2 Megapixel camera. Not forgetting Bluetooth.

This nicely designed slider phone looks like it will be a big hit when released, bit disappointing with the camera, perhaps a 5 MP at least would have done. But if you love your music and hate the iPhone, then this could be for you.

Over at Unwired View, they have two images from the Windows Mobile 6.5 OS, due to launch in 2009. No other details have surfaced yet, but were not sure how much of a difference 6.5 will be compared to 6.1.

Of course these images could be fake, but Smartphone France (original source) say their information is from a reliable source.

POP Entertainment Vending Machine

Above is a video preview of the POP Entertainment vending machine at Stuff Live 2008.

Basically it lets you purchase movies and games, either directly, or by downloading from the machine to your memory stick or media card. Fantastic!

First thoughts says it's going to be quite expensive getting a film from one of these machines, but Universal Pictures and Sony Entertainment, the companies who will run this venture, say the pricing will reflect high street stores. Not bad then.

They will be popping up in cinemas, Gyms, Universities, travel stations etc. With more than 100 titles available at launch there's got to be a movie for you to have. What do you think about this new concept?

Fancy going down the Eco route? Then here a start. It's the Roberts SolarDAB, the digital radio with a difference, it can run entirely on sunlight. Using it's solar panels on top of the device, it charges the unit to give you DAB radio pleasure.

Don't think about using it at night though, unless you've charged it in the day. But for those night time love songs there's AC input available. One thing I must say is there is no FM radio on it, only digital I'm afraid. It goes for 27 hours on full charge, not bad.

We quite like this, it saves power and money. It may set you back £80.00 though.

Said to be based on the existing Samsung Pixon, this 12 megapixel giant will smaller and lighter in size. With mobile phones developing this fast, will there be no need for digital cameras in the future?

Well this looks like it's going to be expensive, and I can say $2,000 expensive to be precise! Motorola have been working hard behind the scenes creating this style icon.

The phone has a 62 carat sapphire crystal lens, which is one of the most scratch resistant materials on earth. The Aura has 16 million colours running through it's round screen, the first ever seen on a mobile phone. It also has an assisted opening feature, 700 plus individual components and it's all housed in stainless steel casing.

Some features include a 2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth and a microSD slot. The Aura may be something different, but I can't see us all flocking to the shops somehow, Can you?

The announcement of this phone just makes me say, why? just why?. I'm not sure what Samsung were thinking when releasing this phone. After the first model, which was awfull, they think this will do well?

From over the top branding to the 120MB of user memory, and a phone with no flash. A key selling point seems to be the shiny LED bar around the outside, to create the surposed "night effect".

Due to ship in November, can't say I'm jumping for joy.

iPods have come along way since they were introduced, which led to the release of super gadget, the iPhone. This Nano is the latest edition, so let's see what it's got to offer.

Apart from all those vibrant colours, the Nano has some pretty cool features. Find music faster by viewing your albums in cover flow. There's a feature called genius which finds other songs on your iPod that go well with the song your currently listening to. And adds them in a playlist for you. Tilt the Nano onto it's side and view album art, pictures or video in landscape. Why not shake your iPod, doing this will skip to a random track. Great shuffle feature. Also there's plenty of games to keep you occupied, available from the iTunes Store.

Review
Well what a brilliant, feature packed phone this is. I love the design, I love the features, I love the way it all fits together. The side bar widgets drag and drop system is excellent, enabling you to select what widgets you need on the home screen. It incorporates the Samsung menu and Windows menu, which work well together.

The touch screen is quite sensitive and works well. I especially like the optical mouse cursor, that gives you an extra way of controlling the phone. Or alternatively there's the stylus for those hard to reach areas. So plenty of ways to navigate through your Samsung Omnia.

Clicking "Main Menu" from the home screen brings up all the features and apps, access to media etc. I quite like that there's an Opera browser installed for internet viewing, alongside Internet Explorer. A nice 5 mega pixel camera on the reverse takes stunning pics, for every situation. And there's many features to try out with the camera. Spend a good few days searching through the phone, alot to see. And still so much to find.

Overall, truly stunning. Forget the iPhone, the Omnia is my choice. Feature packed, future proof, elegant design. What more do you need.

The Verdict

How many mobile phones have Wi-Fi? Not many. The iPhone ruled from the start, but rules even more from it's re-launch.

Such a stylish little machine, and not bad for the price. It's the Creative Zen X-Fi. It plays music and video at a glance, but has exceedingly more to offer.

Whats, what?
Plays MP3, MP4, WMA, AAC, WMV. Has an FM radio, which really keeps hold of that signal. It comes in 16GB or 32GB versions and also has an SD card slot. A 2.5 inch screen insures excellent viewing quality, and the video performance is impressive.

The player uses X-Fi sound enhancement technology, and Wi-Fi media streaming. You also get access to instant messaging services like Windows messenger. It's competitor would be the iPod Nano 8GB. But for £20 more you get twice the storage. (based on the the 16GB Creative Zen)

Overall the Creative Zen X-Fi is somewhat of an excellent contender, and something which should be considered if your in the market for music/video player.

Which Phone?

Isn't it stressfull trying to buy a new mobile phone. There's so much choice out there. Then you've got to go into a shop and get pounced on by the sales rep, then you end up leaving with something you don't want. But what if you want one of the best phones out there, you don't want it to be overtaken by technology, as you will be tied to an 18 month contract. Well.... I'm going to try and find out what is the hottest phone out there at the moment, and on which of the top 5 networks you will get the best possible deal. Let's meet the candidates:

Sony Ericsson K850i: A wonderfull phone, well designed. Get that perfect shot with the 5 mega pixel camera. It's 3G enabled too. Although Sony experienced teething problems with this phone, owners were saying the phone would just die on them.

Nokia N95 8GB: Mini-computer springs into mind when i see this beast. With a 5 mp camera, even wi-fi enabled it has to beat off the competition with it's 8GB internal memory. Nokia claim to have ironed out any problems the original N95 had, in this phone.

LG U990 Viewty: Ah yes, the viewty. Complete with a 3" touch screen, 5 mp camera, high speed video recording and Div-X playback. It's a dream to own and use. Perhaps there might be the slight glitch with the touch navigation now and again, but comes out a good performer.

Samsung F490: With that large, 3.2" touch screen, and 5mp camera, this phone could be quite a hit. Being recently released, it's the newest of the four. But does the newest mean the best. The phone may look stylish, but does that touch screen live up to it's expectations?

Now were going to see which phone is the best to choose out of the five main UK networks; Three, Orange, Vodafone, T-mobile and O2.

Sony Ericsson K850i: Get 400 mins and 500 texts for £15 a month, for 11 months. Then £30 a month for remainder. So half price for 11 months. Plus phones free. On O2

Nokia n95 8GB: Get 750 minutes and unlimited texts, all for £40 a month on Vodafone. Plus £90 cash back, and 3 months free insurance.

LG Viewty: Get 450 minutes or up to 900 texts a month for £30 per month. The phones free.

Samsung F490: Get 500 minutes and unlimited texts for £35 per month with the phone being free. Exclusive to Vodafone. See more plans.

The Sony Ericsson K850i on O2 comes top of the list. It's just an unbeatable deal. The phone may not be perfect, but glitches have been sorted out. The K850i is the best phone out there at the moment, but remember a newer model is always on the horizon. So choose carefully.

Even though Apple has announced that it will allow iPhone owners to install third-party apps in the coming months, one report claims half of those people have already started.

PC World's "carbon PC"

PC World has released more information about its forthcoming green PC. It will have a recycled aluminium case and use sustainably forested wood in the screen bezel, mouse and keyboard.

The company says that at around 40W, its PC will use between 13 and 17 per cent of the energy of a standard desktop and will retail for around £399, with the screen costing an extra £100. PC World also claims that the screen, mouse and keyboard casings will be made from sustainable beech, ash or sapele, making them the first mass-market wooden computer accessories.

In addition, the case is designed to act as a heatsink for the processor, and by using an external power supply the computer will be fanless. PC World also claims that despite the energy efficiency, the machine will have the same capacity as a standard desktop.

BBC iPlayer

More than 10,000 people have signed an e-petition on the 10 Downing Street Web site urging the BBC to make its iPlayer available to non-Windows users.

At the time of writing, 10,006 people had signed the petition calling for the Prime Minster to instruct the BBC to provide the iPlayer for other operating systems, such as Linux or Apple's OS X.

iPlayer is the BBC's online on-demand television service that was launched last month. It will be available for public download on 27 July -- but only for Windows XP users.

DRM Abandoned

At last! DRM could soon be a thing of the past, hopefully.

DRM or "Digital Rights Management" is a copy protection facility which limits downloaded music to one player or restricts the amount of times a music track can be played.

Anyone using iTunes will know that you can only play your downloaded music on your iPod and can't copy it to any other MP3 player.

Soon you can share your music with anyone, (but your not supposed to). Music giants EMI are the first to announce they are scrapping DRM.

But all this will come at a cost to us. As Apple announces DRM free tracks will cost 99p as to the current 79p for DRM encoded music, but I suppose it's worth the little extra cost if you can use your music more freely.

-PS3 breaks UK games console records

The Playstation 3 has become the fastest selling home games console, with 165,000 sold within two days of the launch.

The PS3 has seen off it's rivals despite that big price tag, but it's early days yet. Lets see what it can achieve in the long run.

-Microsoft sells 20 million copies of Vista.

Microsoft claims Windows Vista is off to a fast start, having sold more than 20 million copies since its 30 January consumer release.

By comparison, in its first two months, Windows XP sold 17 million copies, Microsoft said.

-Virgin takes a battering

Virgin Media has responded to the barrage of customer complaints it has received in recent weeks, claiming its performance has not been aided by its recent wrangling with BSkyB.

Readers of CNET.co.uk's sister site, silicon.com, have been posting angry feedback on a recent article about Virgin Media's customer service strategy, criticising the cable broadband giant for everything from poor up-time of its Internet service to unacceptable levels of customer service and long helpline wait times.

-Motion-sensing comes to mobiles

The same technology used in Nintendo's popular Wii games console that lets you bowl strikes and hit tennis volleys like you're Venus Williams is also making its way into mobile handsets.

Responding to a flick of the wrist or sweep of the arm, tiny sensors called accelerometers, which measure linear acceleration in the Wiimote game controller, translate motion into action on the screen. When the technology is added to a mobile phone, the handset's utility changes in several intriguing ways. It can, for example, function as a motion-sensing mouse that lets you browse the mobile Internet by tilting the device left, right, up or down. It even can allow you to monitor a fitness workout by measuring the number of steps you take, your speed and the calories burned.

Review: PlayStation 3

The Sony PlayStation 3 is almost here, so if you want one when it's released on the 23rd of March then get down to your local electronics store and pre-order one to get ahead of the rest.

The PS3 will cost more than it's competitors, so what exactly do you get for your money?

To start with PS3 games are not region coded, so you can buy a game anywhere in the world and it will work on your UK player. But this only applys to your PS3 games. Your PSone and PS2 games will still be regional, this also applys to DVD and Blu-Ray titles, they will only work on a player of the same region.

The PS3 will include a Blu-Ray player. The PS3 being the cheapest Blu-Ray player around. So get a HDTV and a Hi-Def DVD and sit back and enjoy the amazing picture quality.

The controller is Wireless and uses Bluetooth to connect to the main unit. Although there will be no vibration in the controller. The battery from the controller can be charged from the USB port on the front of the PS3. Which gives you 30 hours of gaming pleasure.

The PS3 is network ready and won't cost anything to set up, unlike XBox Live which you have to pay for.

Overall this is set to revolutionise the gaming world, it's years ahead of it's competitors and that heavy price tag doesn't seem so heavy after all when you think of those wonderfull features included.

Nikon D40: Ups their game!

Nikon steps it up a level with introducing the D40x. The original D40 was the baby camera to the D80 (reviewed below), But it was feeling a little left out to it's rivals only having 6 mega pixels, whilst the others had anything up to 10 mega pixels.

Now the D40x has upped to 10 mp to get one over on it's rivals. Coming in cheaper than the Canon EOS 400D (reviewed below), it's sure to turn some heads when it's released on the 22nd March, just over a week away.

But we must feel sorry for those people who bought the D40, and now wishing they'd held out a little longer for the D40x to surface. Although it does cost 500 for the original with two lenses and 600 for the new model but with only one lens. Bit of a price difference but your budget can only decide which one to go for.

In a nutshell, I'd pay that little extra for the D40x to take advantage of the stronger sensor or any other touching up Nikon has made. But most of all to show Canon users just what Nikon can pull out of it's hat, and laugh at them as your camera was cheaper, and would be more than happy to match the spec of the Canon.

K800i: Buy it!

The Sony Ericsson K800i could quite possibly be one of the most elegant phones ever made. Could it be the eye catching design, the smooth finish, perhaps the Cyber-shot 3.2 megapixel camera or the features inside the phone itself. Lets find out...

The Sony is packed full of fun and features and comes in various colours, the best being copper brown as it gives out a sense of class and style. The rear of the phone incorporates a soft to touch feel, where as on the front the washed copper look gives it it's style.

The camera is by far one of the best on the market at the moment giving us a 3.2 megapixel snapper which is auto focus and boasts that Sony trademark, "Cybershot". Complete with a Xenon flash it's more Digi-cam than cam phone. There's also a VGA cam on the front for video calling.

Storage comes integrated and a tiny Sony M2 card slot built in on the side. But don't expect to get a memory card with it, you'll have to do a deal with your supplier.

Features included are the usual as expected, including, a radio, Bluetooth, IR, calender, music player, various applications such as Face Warp which is great, you'll have to try it to find out how great it is. There are some good games and many more available for download, as the K800i is WAP and Internet enabled.

What makes this phone a big hit is it's camera and the stylish good looks. The user interface is easy to use anyway as it's a Sony. Anyone with a Sony Ericsson should agree. The fact of the matter is if you want a phone full of features, a stylish design and topped off with an impressive camera, go out and buy this phone now. You won't be disappointed, well not until the iPhone's out anyway.

Review: Apple iPhone

Find out why everyones getting excited about this phone, and will Apple be able to make this the best selling gadget since their famous family of iPods?

First things first, it's beautifully designed and well proportioned. About as long as a Palm top computer and increadibly thin at 11.6mm. It runs on Apples operating system, OSX. Which is alot more impressive than the Windows Mobile system.

The screen is a multi-tap 3.5" widescreen. There are many different ways you can use your fingers on the touch screen, which you'll have to learn if you get one. Although fat fingers may pose a problem.

It comes pre-installed with many programmes including Google Maps. It includes 802.11g Wi-Fi and bluetooth 2.0. It's a disapointment there's only a 2mp camera, but who takes proper quality pics with their cam phone anyway? Storage comes up to 8GB. You get 5 hrs talk time or 16 hrs music playback, perfect for a whole load of MP3's.

Overall, this is set to be big when it's launched for sale in winter. And if you're thinking of buying a new phone any time soon i'd hold out a while longer as you might be pleasently suprised at what an excelent piece of gadgetry this is.

Review: LG Prada Phone

This phone is set to sell, sell, sell, or be it until the iPhone arrives later this year. I can't say the LG's packed full of features, because it isn't. But it is touch sensitive which is the way forward, of course.

All the usual features included, 2mp camera , Bluetooth, Micro SD slot, Video capture mode etc. It does support office document compatibility and shows off with a flashy interface designed by Prada.

It might not quite match up to the iPhone's spec, but it should draw in buyers just for that over priced clothes label, Prada.
